POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Classics, University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a one-year, non-renewable position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2023-2024 academic year. The promise of excellence in teaching and research is essential. UCSB is on the quarter system, and the
teaching load is 4 courses. These courses will include a seminar for advanced undergraduates, and lower and upper-division courses in Greek and Roman literature and civilization, one of them being our very large lecture course in Greek Mythology. The Department is especially interested in candidates who can
contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda, including efforts such as presenting their research to the department, participating in department research events, and
seeking external presentations. Service duties will include efforts such as serving on the lecture committee and helping to recruit new undergraduate majors. This is a full-time position, and the successful candidate is expected not to hold outside employment during the period of appointment.

The Department will begin reviewing materials on August 1, 2023; to ensure full consideration, all materials must be submitted on or before July 31st. The position will remain open until filled.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
– Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) in Classics or a related field, except the dissertation at the time of application

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
– A PhD in Classics or a related field is required by the time of
appointment.

Preferred qualifications
– Holds a comparable position elsewhere.
– Experience in teaching Greek Mythology.
